Could I see a show of hands for those of you who knew that moths were actually little red balls? Nobody? Okay, just making sure. Mr. Mothball is a game that has you jumping and rolling around levels to pick up purple blobs and avoid the red moths. Regular red moths will remove points from your total and spiked moths will kill you. You have unlimited lives to complete the levels, so don’t fret about dying too much.

Mr. Mothball is controlled by the arrow keys. You don’t run around the levels so much as you roll like a proper ball should. There will be times that you will need to maneuver in mid-air to avoid obstacles so keep that in mind if you find yourself stuck. Have I ever mentioned that I hate jumping puzzles? Despite this I found the game to be pretty fun most of the time.

The graphics were an enjoyable aspect of this game. The sketched appearance of the background gave the game a surreal feeling and the characters were well-animated. It made me smile just to sit there and watch the moths go rolling back and forth. Something about them spinning madly from one end of the level to the other was really amusing.

You have the option to mute music but not the sound effects in Mr. Mothball. This feature can be found in the bottom right corner of the game screen. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t be able to mute the sound effects, but that’s okay. The music itself is actually a pretty catchy song and it’s easy to tune it out as you get into the game.

8/10. Mismatched eyeballs and enemies that bonelessly flop around the levels?  Fantastic.

8/10. Easy enough to pick up quickly though the frustration level can be high at some points. Moderate replay value.

8/10. I would have preferred a mute option for the sound effects as well but you take what you can get.

8/10. I would say that playing a mothball is pretty unique. The platform jumper isn’t so much.

7/10. Responsive controls though it would have been nice to have your character jump just a little higher.

Yes, this really was an above-average game. There are a lot of things I liked about it and just a few things that could have been improved upon. 8/10
